Sun-ah Kim Conductor

Conductor and Organist Sun-ah Kim began her studies of Church Music at ‘Yonsei University’ in Seoul (organ with Prof. Kwak). And she continued her artistic and educational development at the renowned ‘Robert-Schumann Musikhochschule’ in Duesseldorf, Germany, where she specialized in Church Music (Choral conducting with Prof. Volker Hempfling, improvisation with Prof. T. Laux, organ with Prof. A. Roessler, Orchestra conducting with Prof. Herbig).

After graduated with a Diploma in Church Music (Kirchenmusik A-Examen), she continued further with a degree in Choral Conducting at the same institution.

During her studies Mrs. Kim actively engaged as a Cantor at several Lutheran churches in the Duesseldorf region, at the same time, she also participated in a variety of the workshops throughout Europe (Rome, Bremen, Stockholm etc.).

Since Mrs. Kim came back to Korea, she has been a very active lecturer for music courses such as Music Theory, General Bass, Score Reading, Historical Performance Practices and Choral Conducting at Yonsei University, Korea National University of Arts, Presbyterian University and Theological Seminary, Sungkonghoe(Anglican) University, Dankook University, Sungkyul(Holiness) University until now.

As a conductor, she served as a vice-conductor of the ‘The National Chorus of Korea’ and in 2010 she conducted Handel’s Messiah with ‘The National Chorus of Korea’ as a guest conductor again.

Afterwards she eventually has been one of the most leading and influential conductors with ensembles, ‘Bachsolisten Seoul’ and ‘Collegium Vocale Seoul’. These two ensembles are building up impressive reputations from audiences through their successful performances which always encompass diverse traditional and academic repertoire from the Renaissance to Romantic period.

The reason why Mrs. Kim recognized as a conductor with prominent interpretation ability might be that she has a special philosophy and passion for Baroque music and a sense of unique insight to sacred choral music.

A member of ‘Yonsei Institute of Music Research’, Mrs. Kim recently became a president of the ‘Korean Conductors Society for Choral Research’. A passionate educator, conductor, and researcher, Sun-ah Kim and her next musical step are getting attention more and more.
